The Baroque Churches of Ragusa Ibla: Treasures of Stone and Faith
Walking through Ragusa Ibla, the ancient heart of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage site, means immersing yourself in a triumph of late Baroque architecture. After the devastating earthquake of 1693, the city was reborn with an opulent and theatrical style, visible above all in its numerous churches. This itinerary guides you in discovering some of the most significant sacred buildings that define the profile of Ibla.
The Cathedral of St. George, Symbol of Rebirth
The Cathedral of St. George is the main attraction of Ragusa Ibla and a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque. Its imposing facade dominates the scenic Piazza Duomo, which is accessed via a majestic staircase. The church, located on a UNESCO World Heritage site, impresses with its elegance and elevated position.
Inside, the atmosphere is solemn. Among the must-see elements is the beautiful wooden choir, finely decorated, which testifies to the mastery of the craftsmen of the time. A visit to the Cathedral is a fundamental experience for understanding the artistic and spiritual identity of Ragusa.
The Church of St. Joseph: a Baroque Jewel
A few steps from the Duomo, another pearl of the Iblean Baroque can be found: the Church of San Giuseppe. Although smaller in size than San Giorgio, this church is equally fascinating for its decorative richness and harmony of forms. Its façade, rich with sculptures and carvings, is an exquisite example of the style that made the Val di Noto famous. The oval-shaped interior creates a wrapping and evocative effect, inviting visitors to a moment of quiet and admiration.
Santa Maria delle Scale: Witness of Two Epochs
The Church of Santa Maria delle Scale occupies a unique position, not only geographically but also historically. Located along the staircase that connects Ragusa Superiore to Ibla, it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the ancient village. Its peculiarity lies in being one of the few structures that partially survived the 1693 earthquake. For this reason, inside it, original Gothic-Catalan elements and Baroque reconstructions coexist, creating a fascinating dialogue between two different artistic eras. It is the perfect place to appreciate the layered history of the city.
The Churches of the Iblean Garden
Il Giardino Ibleo is not just an oasis of peace, but also houses some ancient places of worship.
Among these stand out the Church of Sant'Agata and the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo; the latter, considered one of the oldest in the city, with origins dating back to the 13th-14th century, was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1693, which destroyed its side aisles.
Today it appears in its surviving form, a fascinating testimony of medieval Ragusa that predates the great Baroque reconstruction.
