Santa Maria delle Scale: the Gothic balcony over Ragusa Ibla
Suspended between Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla, the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale is much more than a place of worship: it is the exact point where the city tells its double soul. Having survived the devastating earthquake of 1693, it preserves precious Gothic traces and offers from its small square one of the most famous views of Baroque Sicily.
A monument between two souls
The church stands on the ramp that connects the new part of Ragusa with the ancient core of Ibla. Its location makes it an almost obligatory passage for those descending toward the baroque heart, but also a stop that offers the first, unforgettable sweeping view of the old city. The current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century, yet retains the right nave in Gothic style, with elegant pointed arches that survived the Val di Noto earthquake.
History and Architectural Stratifications
According to local tradition the church was built by the Cistercian monks of Lentini, in Gothic forms, in the first half of the 13th century. After the earthquake it was enlarged and largely rebuilt in Baroque style. The orientation was rotated and the original apses transformed into the current portals. On the right nave there are four portals from different periods: the first Gothic with finely carved small columns, the second with a Madonna and Child, the third a mix of Gothic and Renaissance with floral motifs, the fourth again Gothic. Inside, a terracotta panel from 1538 stands out, depicting the Transit of the Virgin, attributed to the school of Gagini.
The panorama that made Ragusa famous
From the small square in front of the church, you can enjoy the most photographed view of the city: the dome of the Duomo di San Giorgio emerging from the maze of rooftops and alleys of Ibla, with the valley in the background. At sunset, the warm light transforms the scene into a golden painting. Not by chance, this very vista has entered the collective imagination thanks to the scenes of Inspector Montalbano filmed right here.
