Portal of San Giorgio: The Surviving Gothic Arch of Ragusa Ibla
In Ragusa Ibla, at the entrance to the Giardini Iblei, stands a monument that is a gateway to the past: the ancient Portale di San Giorgio. This splendid Gothic arch is all that remains of the medieval church that once stood here, a symbol of resilience and beauty that survived the devastating earthquake of 1693.
A Portal to the Past
The Portal of San Giorgio is one of the very few architectural remnants of medieval Ragusa. It belonged to the imposing mother church dedicated to Saint George, whose construction was commissioned by the powerful Chiaramonte family starting in 1349. While the church was almost completely razed to the ground by the catastrophic earthquake of 1693, which reshaped the face of the Val di Noto, its entrance portal miraculously remained standing. Today, this isolated arch is not only a fragment of history but also a rare example of pre-Baroque architecture in a city celebrated precisely for its late Baroque style.
The Art Sculpted in Stone
Looking closely at the portal, one can admire the refinement of the Gothic-Catalan style. The structure is characterized by a pointed arch, decorated with a bundle of small columns with foliated capitals. The lunette, placed above the architrave, depicts the most iconic scene: Saint George on horseback piercing the dragon, while the queen of Berito kneels and watches. On the sides of the arch, there are two lozenges containing the eagle, symbol of Ragusa. Pay attention also to the smaller details: among the floral and animal decorations, at the base of the arch-ring, ancient Iblean trades are represented, including the "mielaro," the honey gatherer.
An Open-Air Stage
The current location of the portal is particularly evocative. Set like a theatrical backdrop at the entrance to the lush Iblean Gardens, it creates a fascinating contrast between the ancient stone and the surrounding nature. It has become one of the most photographed spots in Ragusa Ibla, an arch that no longer leads to a nave, but symbolically opens the view onto one of the most beautiful public parks in Sicily. Its solitary presence makes it an even more powerful monument, a tangible reminder of the city that once was.
