In Ragusa Superiore, the more modern part of the city, stands a monument that is an essential stop on any itinerary in Ragusa: the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. This masterpiece of late Sicilian Baroque dominates the square of the same name with its imposing and richly decorated façade, a witness to the city's rebirth after the earthquake of 1693.

A Symbol of Rebirth

The history of the cathedral is linked to the post-earthquake reconstruction. Its construction, begun in 1718 and completed in 1778, was promoted by the "Sangiovannari", the bourgeoisie who moved to the upper part of the city. The cathedral thus became the center of their religious and social life, distinguishing itself from the Duomo di San Giorgio in the older Ragusa Ibla.

The Monumental Facade and the Parvis

The first thing that strikes visitors is its grand facade, set on a wide raised parvis and surrounded by a balustrade that enhances its theatricality. Broad and scenic, it is enriched with columns, sculptures, and a finely carved portal. Next to it stands the elegant 50-meter bell tower with its distinctive spire, a landmark for the entire city.

Hidden Treasures Inside

The interior is a riot of decoration. It is essential to look up to admire the golden stuccoes adorning the vaults and chapels. A detail not to be missed is the distinctive floor, made of black bituminous stone with white stone inlays creating fascinating geometric patterns, a typical feature of the area's churches. The cathedral also houses a precious 18th-century organ, still in working order.

A Panoramic View from the Bell Tower

For travelers seeking an unforgettable perspective, if available, climbing the bell tower is a recommended stop. After climbing over a hundred steps, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the rooftops of Ragusa and the surrounding Hyblean countryside. It is a unique opportunity to appreciate the structure of the city from above and take spectacular photographs.
