Donnafugata Castle: Guide to the Sumptuous Noble Residence of Ragusa
About 20 kilometers from Ragusa, nestled in the Hyblean countryside, stands the Castle of Donnafugata. A lavish late 19th-century noble residence that blends architectural styles, fascinating stories, and a touch of cinematic magic.
A noble residence, not a fortress
The appearance of the castle can be deceiving, with its towers and battlements, but in reality it is a large country residence commissioned by Baron Corrado Arezzo de Spuches in the late 19th century. The name itself is shrouded in mystery. One theory traces it back to the Arabic "Ayn as Jafat" (Source of Health), due to the presence of a spring nearby. Another, more romantic one, links it to the legend of Queen Blanche of Navarre, who is said to have escaped from an imprisonment imposed on her by Count Bernardo Cabrera.
Eclectic architecture and lavish interiors
The main facade of the castle is a fascinating blend of styles, dominated by a loggia in the Gothic-Venetian style. The structure covers approximately 2,500 square meters and boasts 122 rooms, about twenty of which are open to the public. Visitors can access the piano nobile via an imposing staircase made of pitch stone.
Inside, the rooms still retain their original period furnishings. Among the most important is the Hall of Coats of Arms, where the heraldic emblems of the most important Sicilian noble families are painted. Other noteworthy rooms include the Music Room, the Hall of Mirrors, and several bedrooms that offer a glimpse into the aristocratic life of the time.
The enchanted park and its labyrinth
The castle is surrounded by a magnificent 8-hectare park, an oasis of peace and a place designed for the delight of the baron's guests. Among large ficus trees and other exotic and Mediterranean species, various "attractions" are hidden, such as: the famous stone labyrinth.
Getting lost in the labyrinth is one of the most beloved experiences for visitors of all ages.
An exceptional film set
The evocative beauty of the Castle of Donnafugata has not gone unnoticed by the film world. The residence has been chosen as a location for several internationally renowned films and TV series. Among these, notable scenes from Luchino Visconti's "The Leopard" and "The Viceroys" stand out. More recently, its terrace has become one of the iconic settings of the famous TV series "Inspector Montalbano", helping to make it an even more popular destination among tourists.
